| Jennifer Brown by Edna Gilbert |
Have you heard what happened to Jennifer Brown, the girl who was dreaded all over town? She never looked tidy, her hair was a fright and really her manners were far from right! She would tease girls and cheat them, she'd steal and she'd lie, she thought it was great fun to make someone cry! Some children are naughty but nice with it too. Jennifer Brown was bad through and through. Then something happened to Jennifer Brown, who smiles now and greets when she meets you in town. Her hair's neat and shining, her clothes fresh and clean. You'd never believe it unless you had seen. I met her one morning, and strange to relate, she carried my parcels right to the gate. "Excuse me" I said " but I would like to know whatever has happened to you so?" Then Jenny stopped smiling, though still her eyes shone. She said "I was hateful, but that has all gone! For now I'm a Brownie, and proud as can be. I'm thinking of others, instead of just me! I learned to be useful, make sad people smile. I wasn't so easy just for a while. But I knew I could make it. I soon lost my fears, and I've not been so happy for years and years". |
