Ashton is one of the 9 towns that make up the borough of Tameside. The name Ashton means village or town surrounded by Ash trees. In the mid -19th century, to distinguish it from other surrounding towns Under-Lyne was added to it's name. Tameside is named after the River Tame and the Tame Valley which diagonally cuts through the Metropolitan Borough. Lying seven miles due east of Manchester, in the North West region of England. Geoffrey Charles Hurst MBE was born in Ashton, he scored a hat-trick at the World Cup in the 1966 final for England. Quite a few of the Coronation Street characters have been from Ashton.
